CVE-2020-0688 — Microsoft Exchange

CVE-2020-0688 is a high-severity vulnerability in Microsoft Exchange that allows remote code execution when attackers control valid credentials and exploit improper validation of serialized data in Exchange Control Panel (ECP). This flaw is under active exploitation by the NightEagle APT group, who are leveraging it to deploy persistent backdoors on targeted infrastructure. No workaround exists; patching is critical.

Attack Vector

NightEagle APT initiates attacks by acquiring compromised VPN credentials, granting initial access to internal networks. They then target unpatched Microsoft Exchange servers, exploiting CVE-2020-0688 to execute code remotely and install the GhostContainer backdoor (Trojan.MSIL.GhostContainer.gen). For lateral movement and persistence, attackers use legitimate Microsoft dev tunnels, rdp2tcp for RDP traffic tunneling, and network traffic redirection via Cloudflare WARP tunnels. Indicators of compromise include connections to GitHub repositories (https://github.com/mirror-js/mirror-js/, https://github.com/browserthemes/resourcepack/) and suspicious IPs associated with Russian Cloudflare WARP endpoints.

Who Is at Risk

All organizations running Microsoft Exchange Server versions vulnerable to CVE-2020-0688 are at risk, with confirmed targeting of Russian companies by NightEagle APT. Any enterprise with exposed Exchange ECP endpoints and weak VPN credential hygiene is susceptible to this attack chain.

Patch & Mitigate

  • Patch: Apply Microsoft’s security update for CVE-2020-0688 (released February 2020) to all Exchange servers immediately.
  • Workaround: None. Disabling ECP is not sufficient; only patching fully mitigates the risk.
  • Detect: Review Exchange and VPN logs for anomalous logins, deployment of Trojan.MSIL.GhostContainer.gen, traffic to suspicious GitHub repositories, and connections via Cloudflare WARP or rdp2tcp tunneling tools.

MITRE ATT&CK

  • TA0001 — Initial Access: Attackers use compromised VPN credentials to breach the network perimeter.
  • TA0008 — Lateral Movement: Tools like rdp2tcp and dev tunnels enable movement between internal systems.
  • TA0011 — Command and Control: GhostContainer backdoor and traffic tunneling maintain attacker persistence and control.
