CVE-2026-73570: Zimbra Collaboration Suite — Widespread Unauthorized Access (August 2026)
CVE-2026-73570 — Zimbra Collaboration Suite
CVE-2026-73570 is a critical vulnerability in the Zimbra Collaboration Suite that allows attackers to gain unauthorized access and impersonate users. The flaw is under active exploitation as of mid-August 2026, with a CISA-mandated patch deadline due to its severity and widespread impact.
Attack Vector
Attackers exploit CVE-2026-73570 remotely by targeting exposed Zimbra Collaboration Suite instances. The vulnerability allows bypass of authentication controls, enabling adversaries to access user mailboxes and impersonate legitimate users. No user interaction is required, and exploitation can occur over the internet if the affected system is reachable. Indicators of compromise may include unexpected logins, anomalous session tokens, and unauthorized mailbox access events.
Who Is at Risk
All organizations running unpatched Zimbra Collaboration Suite deployments are at risk, regardless of version, if the instance is internet-facing. Over 40 U.S. organizations and dozens more worldwide have been confirmed compromised. Sectors affected include government, education, and private enterprises. Any Zimbra deployment not patched since mid-August 2026 should be considered potentially compromised.
Patch & Mitigate
- Patch: Apply the official Zimbra security update addressing CVE-2026-73570 immediately, as mandated by CISA. Check Zimbra advisories for the latest fixed version.
- Workaround: If patching is not possible, restrict external access to Zimbra web interfaces and implement network-layer controls to limit exposure.
- Detect: Review authentication logs for anomalous logins, monitor for unexpected user impersonation events, and inspect for suspicious session activity since mid-August 2026.
MITRE ATT&CK
- T1078 — Valid Accounts: Attackers leverage stolen or forged credentials to access Zimbra accounts.
- T1190 — Exploit Public-Facing Application: The vulnerability is exploited via exposed Zimbra web interfaces.
- T1071 — Application Layer Protocol: Adversaries use standard web protocols to interact with compromised Zimbra services.
