CVE-2026-88771/88772 — Citrix NetScaler

CVE-2026-88771 and CVE-2026-88772 are critical vulnerabilities in Citrix NetScaler appliances, permitting unauthenticated remote code execution (RCE). Both flaws are under active exploitation by suspected state-backed actors, with attacks confirmed across at least 78 organizations in Europe and North America. No official CVSS score is published yet, but operational impact is severe and immediate patching is mandatory.

Attack Vector

Attackers exploit these vulnerabilities by sending crafted HTTP requests to exposed NetScaler interfaces. Successful exploitation enables deployment of webshells (notably the "Whipshot" webshell, which uses Base64-encoded C2 payloads in HTTP headers) and custom tunneling malware ("Slapshot" Python-based tool). This allows adversaries to execute arbitrary commands, steal credentials, and maintain persistent access. No user interaction is required; only network exposure is necessary.

Who Is at Risk

All organizations running unpatched Citrix NetScaler devices are vulnerable, especially those with internet-facing management interfaces. Confirmed victims include Frisius MC and Amphia, with additional impact to government agencies, healthcare providers, and enterprises. Healthcare sector disruptions include suspension of online patient portals and forced isolation of critical systems.

Patch & Mitigate

  • Patch: Apply Citrix security updates for NetScaler addressing CVE-2026-88771 and CVE-2026-88772 immediately. Check Citrix advisories for specific hotfix versions.
  • Workaround: If patching is not possible, restrict external access to NetScaler management interfaces and segment affected devices from critical networks.
  • Detect: Review logs for unusual HTTP headers containing Base64 strings, deployment of unknown webshells ("Whipshot"), and outbound connections initiated by Python processes ("Slapshot"). Monitor for suspicious authentication attempts and privilege escalations.

MITRE ATT&CK

  • TA0001 — Initial Access: Attackers exploit public-facing NetScaler vulnerabilities for direct entry.
  • TA0002 — Execution: Webshells and tunneling tools enable arbitrary command execution on compromised devices.
  • TA0005 — Defense Evasion: Custom malware and encoded payloads are used to bypass detection and maintain persistence.
