CVE-2026-8933: Canonical snap-confine — Root Escalation via Race Condition (July 2026)
CVE-2026-8933 — Canonical snap-confine
CVE-2026-8933 is a high-severity vulnerability in Ubuntu's snap-confine utility, used by snapd on default Desktop installations. The flaw enables local privilege escalation: an unprivileged user can exploit a race condition to gain root access. No evidence of active exploitation has been reported, but the attack is practical and public proof-of-concept code is expected soon.
Attack Vector
The vulnerability arises from a race condition in snap-confine's handling of temporary directories. An attacker with local access can manipulate these directories to bypass AppArmor protections by leveraging systemd-udevd. By dropping malicious udev rules, the attacker can execute arbitrary commands as root. The exploit requires only standard user access and does not depend on sudo or pre-existing elevated privileges.
Who Is at Risk
Affected systems include Ubuntu Desktop versions 24.04, 25.10, and 26.04, as well as any Linux distributions using snapd with snap-confine in a similar configuration. Canonical and all organizations deploying Ubuntu Desktop at scale—especially employee workstations, developer endpoints, and administrative desktops—are at immediate risk. Ubuntu Server installations are not affected unless snapd and snap-confine are present and configured similarly.
Patch & Mitigate
- Patch: Apply the security updates for snap-confine as soon as released for Ubuntu 24.04, 25.10, and 26.04. Monitor Canonical advisories for hotfix release dates.
- Workaround: Temporarily disable snapd or restrict access to snap-confine for untrusted users if patching is delayed.
- Detect: Review audit logs for unusual activity involving /tmp directories, udev rule changes, or unexpected invocations of snap-confine and systemd-udevd by non-root users.
MITRE ATT&CK
- TA0004 — Privilege Escalation: The attacker exploits a race condition to escalate from user to root.
- TA0003 — Persistence: Malicious udev rules can provide ongoing root access after initial exploitation.
